The Thrifted Kitchen {Strawberry Rhubarb Pie}

Good morning my dears! I hope your week is going well. Mine has become unexpectedly busy, but I made sure to carve out some time for today's Thrifted Kitchen. Right now, strawberry and rhubarb are in season, and I've been itching to make a pie from them. I found a recipe online that looked really good, but then I picked up that stack of vintage Better Homes and Gardens I thrifted a while back, and on the cover of the June 1966 issue was exactly what I was looking for!

My only hesitation was it called for a plain pastry crust, which doesn't seem unreasonable, unless you have a fear of dough like I do. :) I usually get pre-made crusts from the freezer section because the last time I attempted homemade pie crust, it was a disaster. But I decided enough was enough. It was time to try it again and, miraculously, it turned out great! The only adjustment I would suggest is with the filling; to me it tasted like there was a little too much rhubarb, so I would cut back on it a smidge. The recipe also calls for a 9-inch pie pan, which is a must. I only had a 10, so the pie ended up not being as full as it should have been. But that's just aesthetics. :)

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie from Better Homes and Gardens (1966)
Yields one 9-inch pie

1 1/2 cups sugar
3 tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 pound rhubarb, cut in 1/2-inch pieces (3 cups)
1 cup sliced fresh strawberries
1 recipe plain pastry*
1 tablespoon butter or margarine

In a large bowl, combine sugar, tapioca, salt and nutmeg. Add rhubarb and strawberries; mix well to coat fruit. Let stand about 20 minutes. Spoon fruit mixture into pastry-lined 9-inch pie plate. Dot with the butter or margarine. Moisten pastry edge. Top with lattice crust; flute edge. Bake in hot oven (400 degrees) for 35 to 40 minutes. If desired, decorate lattice top with additional sliced fresh strawberries dipped in melted currant jelly.


2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup shortening
5 to 7 tablespoons cold water

Sift together flour and salt. Cut in shortening with pastry blender till pieces are size of small peas. (To make pastry extra tender and flaky, divide shortening in half. Cut in first half till mixture resembles corn meal. Then cut in remaining half till like small peas.) Sprinkle with water, a tablespoon at a time, gently tossing with fork till all is moistened. Divide dough in half and form in two balls; chill.

On lightly floured surface, roll one half of the dough to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Transfer to pie plate; trim 1/2 inch beyond rim. For lattice top: Roll out second half of dough; with pastry wheel, cut in strips about 1/2 inch wide and 12 inches long. Lay strips over fruit filling and 1-inch intervals. Fold back alternate strips to weave over and under in crosswise pattern. Trim even with outer rim of pie plate. Moisten edge; fold lower crust over strips. Seal and flute edge.

Sustainable Style: Articles of Hope

This past weekend the hubs and I went down to Texas to visit his family. We spent two glorious days in Austin, then headed back to McKinney (near Dallas) where his parents live. His mom said the downtown area there had loads of cute boutique stores, so we did some window shopping while the guys played golf. The last store we visited had these gorgeous bags up by the register, and as I looked at the price, I noticed they were made by a company called Articles of H.O.P.E. (the acronym standing for Help Our Planet Earth).

I jotted down the information so I could do some research when we got back, and it turns out this company is part of a campaign started by four teenagers who wanted to educate others on how their daily decisions effect the environment, especially the use of plastic bags. So they created reusable alternatives called Hope Sacs, and then a more stylish line called Green and Gorgeous, and since then have been speaking at schools, businesses and various organizations, teaching others how they can become more conscious consumers.

They didn't have the ones I saw in the store online, which looked more like hobo bags made from gorgeous Indian fabrics, but I thought they were still worth a mention! Be sure and check out their website and Facebook Page to learn more.

Style Spots: Pinch Hitters

Greetings from Texas, y'all! :) The hubs and I are rounding out a great weekend spent with his family — right on the heels of our coming back from Guatemala — so with all this crazy travel, I've had no time whatsoever to hit up the thrift stores! This means (gasp!) I have no Style Spots to share with you today.

But I shall not leave you without eye candy, my dears. Check out these amazing finds from some of my thrifty friends around the blogosphere...

A La Modern thrifted these Knoll Saarinen chairs at Salvation Army during a 50% off sale...and I am seriously drooling over this find.

I love this embroidery art that NowSoLA Vintage found. So many colors to pull from to decorate a room!

Another gorgeous chair, spotted, haggled and bought at an estate sale by Gone Thrifting. I absolutely love the white with that wood grain.

One day I will have a Catherineholm piece, but until then, I'll just salivate over the ones that others find, like this one from Sunshine of My Loves.

Love, love, love this vintage tea kettle from The Beetle Shack. What's even better is it came from her grandmother!

I'm a sucker for handmade linens, and am over the moon for Small House by the Sea's thrifted quilt!

Since I read about the folding of ReadyMade last week, I feel like I've been going through a mourning period, not only for this utterly inspiring magazine, but the ones we've been losing as each year passes, especially when you are part of the demographic it serves (however small that may be). It saddens me tremendously that print is in such jeopardy, because there's just nothing like a little present in your mailbox every month that you can hold, skim, and then save in a stack for future inspiration.

Name That Gnome!

Okay. Here's where the slightly eccentric side of me comes out. On Sunday, my parents came over for dinner and brought with them a couple presents for the hubs's and my one-year wedding anniversary. They made it clear that one was for both of us, and the other was more for me. Needless to say I was excited to see what "mine" was, and as I peeled off the paper, I saw a pointy red hat, then two eyes, then a white beard...that's right, they got us a garden gnome!

Much to the hubs's dismay, my mom said she remembered me saying I'd like one to adorn our lawn, and now that he's here (and because I have an affinity for personifying inanimate objects) he needs a name! This is where you come in. See that poll below? I'd love it if you voted for your favorite name; or do you think you have a better one? Go ahead and leave it in a comment. After a week I'll announce the winner, and then this little guy can officially be part of our crazy family.

The Thrifted Kitchen {Apple Waffles}

Good morning my dears! How are we all on the Thrifted Kitchen Thursday? Ready to tame the secondhand shopping world? Well...I've got a breakfast that will get you up and going, and it comes from the brilliant minds at the Culinary Arts Institute (specifically their Encyclopedic Cookbook from 1968): apple waffles.

I chose this recipe for three simple reasons: 1) I needed something to cook for breakfast this morning; 2) I need to use up our apples before we leave town; and 3) my grandma gave me a waffle iron she thrifted from the free table at her retirement home that I was anxious to put to good use!

Now, if you've been following the past couple recipes on here, you'll know I experience some hitches with them, but this one came out seamless. The only moment of doubt I had was after adding the apples and spices to the batter because it was too thick. But the last step is folding in stiff egg whites, and that brought things back to where they needed to be. So if you try this recipe, just remember not to fret until those whites are incorporated.

Apple Waffles
Yields 6 small waffles & 4 large ones

2 cups sifted flour (I used whole wheat to make things a bit more healthy)
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs, separated
1 1/2 cups milk
5 tablespoons melted shortening
1 1/3 cups chopped uncooked apples
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon sugar

Mix and sift dry ingredients. Combine beaten eggs yolks, milk and shortening; add to dry ingredients, beating until smooth. Add apple, cinnamon and sugar to batter and mix until combined. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour spoonful of batter into each section of a hot waffle iron. Bake until brown.

Other Variations
(add in place of apple, cinnamon and sugar)

Banana — 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 cup thinly sliced bananas
Chocolate — 2 ounces melted chocolate and 1 tablespoon sugar
Coconut — 1 cup shredded coconut and 1 tablespoon sugar
Lemon or Orange — 2 teaspoons grated orange or lemon peel

So this was suppose to go up this morning, tantalizing your taste buds at work and prompting you to splurge a little on your lunch break...but Blogger (yet again) was having issues. However, it's not too late to appreciate these puffed pastries! Grab some on your way home and walk it off in the morning. :)

Sustainable Style: Fig + Kindle

As a first-time vegetable (and fruit) garden-grower this year, I've really enjoyed the process of planting, tending and now harvesting our own produce. Everything tastes just a little bit better when your own energy is poured into what you're eating, and you know that it's not bogged down with pesticides and chemicals. Those standards are definitely at the forefront of my mind when I shop for supplementary fruits and veggies, and why I was so excited to stumble across Fig + Kindle.

Based in New England, this local-minded company creates stunning sweets, pastries, brittles, marshmallows, baked goods, syrups, jellies, sugars and preserves that are 100% handmade, local and organic (when possible). They also lack the things that get you down, like GMOs, corn syrup, preservatives and artificial colors and flavors.

On top of that, their packaging is stunning (in my opinion) in its simplicity. I'd love to get my hands on some strawberry preserves, lemon verbena syrup, and those rose ginger sabl├ęs! How about you?

Style Spots: Stumbled Upon

Happy Monday folks! We made it back from Guatemala late Saturday, and let me tell you, it's an absolutely beautiful place. We had so much fun and there was so much to take in, but that's another post. Today is about thrifted finds! And no, they're not from Central America (sorry); they're ones I picked up a couple days before our trip whilst thrifting for Spanish-English dictionaries. I promised the hubs I'd only be searching for those, but how can he expect me to just walk right by some serious eye candy?

I found this sugar/creamer set piled behind a bunch of bowls on a shelf at the Goodwill. It has gold leaves and a light pink border around them. Super cute, but doesn't go with our dining room, so it'll be heading to the store!

I'm really in love with the color of this little Hall pitcher, and it's such a solid piece that's in great condition. Still deciding whether it's for the home or store though.

Some time ago I thrifted a single juice glass in the Butterfly Gold pattern, then at St. Vincent I came across a set of seven of them, but this has alternating colors of gold and brown, which I haven't seen before. But hey, now I have a set!

I'm still researching these glasses, also found at St. Vincent. It's a set of 11, but I figured that's better than a set of five or seven, so I scooped them up for the store. Anyone know the maker? I was thinking Hazel Atlas, but I could be very wrong.

The estate sale was chock full of Pyrex; so much so that my heart rate when up when I saw it. But it was the first day, and the guy running the sale was asking fairly high prices for each piece, so I wasn't able to go home with much other than these two Cinderella bowls in the Butterprint pattern. And I only bought them because they were an anniversary present, otherwise it would've been too much for my taste!

At the Goodwill I also picked up an olive green Pyrex mixing bowl. I thrifted the larger size some weeks ago, so I thought they'd go nicely together, even if the original set was multiple colors.

And last but not least, my FAVORITE find of the day....

Beautiful Peptol pink luggage! This set is in seriously good condition, and I'm so tempted to keep it for myself, but I have a nice green set that I would get more use out of, so these babies will be up for sale in the store (if you're interested!). Then when you watch "Pan-Am" this fall and get that itch to travel, you'll be all set (ha).

Happy Monday morning my dears! By the time you read this the hubs and I (and four other friends) will be embarking on a glorious week of fun and frolic in Guatemala. We'll be seeing Mayan ruins, hiking a volcano, hanging out on the beach and helping out at a feeding center in Yalu, one of the villages. It's safe to say we're going to have a blast, so I'll be sure and take tons of photos to share with you all! Have a great week!


DIY Friday

Happy, happy Friday! I'm so excited for this weekend. Tonight we're headed to the park by our home for a food truck fest sponsored by Sauce Magazine. Tomorrow is an early celebration of our one-year wedding anniversary (seriously? a year already?) because Sunday (the actual anniversary), we'll be on a plane to Guatemla for one week! Needless to say, I am so flippin' excited!

But don't worry, I'll definitely have these DIYs on the brain while I'm gone (maybe) . :)
